September 28, 2013 Trailday Newsletter
Hello Trailblazers!

Happy Fall! The monsoons of recent days promise to bring beautiful weather for our Saturday Trailday. It's time to turn off the A/C, step outside and breathe deep, followed by:

Trailday Yoga by the Lake Dianna Magrum will lead us in a one hour Yoga class this Saturday from 7:00am to 8:00am. It's a low-impact training that stretches you in ways you never knew possible. You'll feel great when you're through, and bending over to pull weeds on the Trail will be much easier. A light breakfast and yogurt will follow the training. Please let us know if you will be attending, and feel free to contribute to the breakfast table.

Trailday - This month maintenace on the Trails will consist of clearing around the new signage that Louise Hunt has been installing and re-routing a few trails due to our gopher tortoises who seem to enjoy moving their burrows to the middle of the Trail where the most beautiful vegetation and most scenic views reside.

Great News from the WinterFair Office

Alright music lovers, get ready for a great concert at this year's 3nd Annual WinterFair Festival. The program has extended to 2 days this year, with a concert on Friday night, December 20, 2013 and the daytime activities on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Our extra special guest for the concert will be John Sebastian! John is the founder of The Lovin' Spoonful, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a prolific songwriter with #1 hits like "Do You Believe in Magic", "Summer in the City", and the theme song from the TV hit "Welcome Back Kotter."

We are very excited about having John help the efforts to save the Florida Scrub-Jay.
Be sure to mark your calendar for this exciting event!

Happenings at the Trail

Adopt-a-Road Cleanup
This month, the road cleanup was actually a triple-header event:

...... Monte Vista Road cleanup:   Volunteers cleaned 2 miles of highway. Normally, the person finding the most unusual trash wins a T-Shirt but this time nothing was unusual. A good effort however. Following the cleanup:

...... "Giving Garden" Prep:   It's time for the Fall planting of the Giving Gardens, so volunteers weeded the raised beds, pruned fruit trees and other pollinator attracting bushes and prepared the soil for planting.

...... Bar-B-Cue:   To reward our efforts, we treated ourselves to a bar-b-cue. Entertainment was provided by "Chef" Bruce as he nearly incinerated himself and the burgers as well. Everyone was very kind, saying they tasted good, but we all knew better. I guess if you like "well done" they were OK. In spite of the Culinary Catastrophe, a good time was had by all, and a lot of work was accomplished.

The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail

Boy Scout Activity
Scout Ben Jackson from Troop 86 applied hours towards his volunteer requirements for citizenship in school and his Boy Scout merit badge. Ben potted up nearly 300 organic vegetables for the Giving Garden, and will complete his requirements by planting the raised beds and gardens when the plants are ready to be installed.

Volunteer of the Month

female bluebird

Jana Harris

Jana has been volunteering at the Trail for over 4 years. One of her interests has been installing, maintaining and monitoring over 20 bluebird boxes on the Trail, weekly.

She also heads up the Butterfly outreach activities and helps maintain the Craig Tufts Pollinator Garden, including the Monarch Waystation.
During the Wings and Wildflowers Festival, Jana will be directing the Monarch tagging operation. This activity will allow visitors to tag and release these beautiful Monarchs and learn about their migration habits. This program would not happen without Jana's support.
