Hello Trailblazers and Friends,

Hightlights of the Trail

Our December and January have been colder than average again this year, and fortunately we have had a bumper crop of acorns for the scrub-jays. They have been feverishly gathering and burying all they can get their beaks on. The habitat has also taken a beating with the drought and cold, but tucked down just beneath the surface, and at the base of some plants, we begin to see the emergence of bright green growth on the occasional warmer days.

We had a special visitor to the Trail with Jake Scott from England. Jake, was formally based in Naples working with National Wildlife Federation focusing on protecting the habitat of our endangered panther. It is so good to see you Jake and for introducing us to your parents. Other visitors included migratory RV dwellers from around the country making the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail their destination for a Life Bird, the Florida scrub-jay.

January Trailday

Trailday- Saturday, January 22, 2011 8am-11am
We will work on the section of Trail adjacent to the parking lot. The clearing of weeds around the young scrub-oaks is looking very good in this section, and this time of year they are easy to remove. Bring gloves, and clippers.
We have several overlapping activities going on this day. Feel free to sit in on Sherry Boas' program beginning at 10am-10:30, followed by a book signing until noon. (please RSVP).

The cookout that was postponed after the last Adopt a Roadway Clean-Up, due to the rain will be held. This will be ready by 11:15 am and we will need people to help set up and grill. Please let us know if you can help and if you will be staying for the cookout. Please fill out the handy form below or feel free to call us at  (352)-429-5566.

Laura Erickson, Presents Close Encounters of The Bird Kind
Made possible in part through National Wildlife Federation and donors like you. Author of four books, Science Editor at Cornell Lab Of Ornithology, Wild bird Rehabilitator and Educator presents an hour in the life of what she has experienced in the many roles she has played protecting our wild birds. Imagine what it is like to have a Pileated Woodpecker explore the crevices of your ear with its extensible tongue. Her intimate encounters with birds were sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking, but always fascinating.
