Florida Scrub-Jay Trail News
News Archives Back to News Trailday August 26, 2023
The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail is home to over 130 species of birds, 98 active gopher tortoises, 59 butterfly species, and 239 native plant species. It is also home to a reminder of an important event in American history. The Trailhouse that serves as the first stop on any visit to The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail is a replica of a “cracker house” – the types of homes built by early  Florida settlers.
Bruce and Cathy Brown, owners of B.B. Brown’s Gardens and founders of The Florida Scrub-Jay Consortium, purchased the building from the movie set of Rosewood – a 1997 movie based on the 1923 Rosewood Massacre, a true story about a racist lynch mob storming Rosewood, FL, a peaceful African American town.
The Trailhouse porch has also been the welcome spot for musicians playing for special events, birders looking to spot the Florida Scrub-Jay, gardeners, and hikers, as well as a point of interest for inquisitive birds and a nesting spot for Carolina Wrens.
Everybody is a friend at The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail. We look forward to your visit!

Our summer hours are Saturday and Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
We will resume our normal hours of Saturday – Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., beginning Saturday, October 7.

Trailday

Join us on the Trailhouse porch this Saturday at 8:00 a.m. for a light breakfast and coffee and a look at what's happening at The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail before heading out for trail maintenance. We welcome and appreciate whatever efforts you can make in our continuing restoration of this land to its natural habitat, providing the necessary elements and support for the birds, butterflies, flora and fauna that have found a home here.

Please bring any hand pruners or loppers you have (we have a limited availability of equipment to loan for the day). Everyone should also wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, and long pants. Bring your water bottle - we will supply plenty of cold water to refill your bottle.

Find some quiet, peaceful “happy” at Sunrise Yoga, Saturday, August 26, beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Dianna will lead us through calming, reflective poses that are suitable for any experience level.
All you need to bring is your mat and your enthusiasm.             (no charge)

Your support of The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail through membership or donations helps continue our efforts to maintain the scrub habitat and protect the Florida Scrub-Jay from extinction.
