HOW TO IDENTIFY PLANTS WORKSHOP WITH DR. MARC MINNO
MARCH 11, 2023 1:30PM-4:00PM
Plant diversity is complex. With nearly 3,000 species of native flowering plants in Florida and thousands of cultivated, naturalized, or adventive exotics, where to begin? Many kinds of plants are distinctive and easy to identify, while others are closely similar and difficult to tell apart.
Dr. Marc Minno will lead this free, informative workshop where participants will observe, compare, and identify plants growing at the Florida Scrub Jay Trail and B.B. Brown's Gardens near Clermont. During this training Dr. Minno will offer tips on which characteristics are useful for identification and which references to Florida plants may be of help.
Participants will learn:
• Basic plant morphology terminology
• How to recognize major families of vascular plants in Florida
• How to identify some common tree, shrub, and herbaceous species by sight
• Tips for remembering the differences between similar plant families and species
• How to use dichotomous keys for plant identification
• Additional resources available to help identify plants
