The scouts conduct Flag Retirement Ceremonies where old and tattered flags are ceremoniously placed in the campfire by military, first responders, law enforcers, scouts, and the general public. This traditional ceremony is very touching, and we are proud to have a Flag Retirement Garden, where the ashes are buried, at The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail. Over 300 flags were retired in the November 2021 ceremony.
Ace Hardware stores in Clermont and Groveland as well as the American Legion Post in Clermont have Flag Retirement boxes available for your flags.

Florida Scrub-Jay Trail and Clermont Birding Hotspots – Some walking (sandy surfaces). (Trip 23a). For more information or to register, click here. For the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail Bird Checklist, click here.
$30, no lunch included. Leaders: John Thomton (Orange Audubon Society) and Bruce and Cathy Brown (Florida Scrub-Jay Trail). 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Maximum participants: 12.
Years ago, Bruce and Cathy Brown discovered some Florida Scrub-Jays using their plant nursery. They founded the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail as a place for people to get outside and enjoy nature, and to learn about the endangered Florida Scrub ecosystem. Bruce and Cathy will bird with us and share how they developed the Trail. Then we will hit some other birding hotspots in the Clermont area: Country roads south of Mascotte, Lake Hiawatha Park for woodland and marshland birds, and will scope Lake Minneola for diving ducks, grebes and possibly loons. Possible sightings include Sandhill Crane, Common Ground-Dove, Wild Turkey, Northern Bobwhite, Eastern Meadowlark, Red-headed Woodpecker, Purple Gallinule, Northern Flicker, Horned Grebe, Common Loon, Vermillion Flycatcher (seen on last year’s Clermont CBC) and Florida Scrub-Jay.
