Great American Campout Day
Saturday, June 26, 2021

Of course, camping isn't for everyone!

These are actual comments left on U.S. Forest Service registration sheets and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips:

  • “A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call.”
  • “Escalators would help on steep uphill sections.”
  • “Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to wilderness.”
  • “Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands.”
  • “Found a smoldering cigarette left by a horse.”
  • “Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill.”
  • “Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests.”
  • “Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter.”
  • “Chairlifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them.”
  • “The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please eradicate these annoying animals.”
  • “Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights.”
  • “Need more signs to keep area pristine.”
  • “A McDonald’s would be nice at the trail head.”
  • “The places where trails do not exist are not well marked.”
  • “Too many rocks in the mountains.”

Even if you can't camp out,
you can say Hello to Summer
by enjoying the great outdoors
at the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail!

Is sleeping in tents too in-tents for you?
Relax with some early-morning yoga beginning at 7:00 a.m.!
Relax and listen to the sounds of nature as we are led through calming, reflective poses that are suitable for any experience level. All you need to bring is your mat and your enthusiasm. (No charge)

Trail Fun!

From 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.
we weed and trim
and laugh and discover.
We are up to our ears in
pure nature, doing what we
can to preserve
this special habitat.

Eagle Scout Candidate Paul Oyarzun has completed a new Trail Map display by the entrance to the east trail.
(new trail brochures are on their way!)

We will finish clearing this area to highlight this beautiful addition to the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail.
Please bring loppers, hand pruners, and gloves if you have them. If not, we have limited availability of equipment to loan for the event. Everyone should wear closed-toed shoes and long pants. Bring your water bottle - we will supply plenty of cold water to refill your bottle.

National Moth Week

July 17-25, 2021

Join Cheri Pierce for Mothing on Saturday evening, July 17, from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at B.B. Brown's Gardens at the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail.

Advance registration required. $2.00 per person.

Did you know that scientists estimate that there are up to 500,000 moth species? Most of these moths are nocturnal making them difficult to see.

To bring them into view, Mothing enthusiast Cheri Pierce will return to the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail with special lights and screening to allow close-up viewing of these magnificent creatures of the night.

Join us for a fun, family-friendly program and take in some art, science and fresh air.
