Trailday!    Qigong!    Birding!    Treats!

7:00 a.m. Karen McCahey, student of Tevia Feng of White Tiger Qigong, will give us more insight into the practice of Qigong - the art of learning to move energy through our bodies using movement, breath and intention.

Qi means energy and Gong means work.

Karen is studying dynamic Qigong and will do the warm up with everyone which opens the meridians and allows the energy to flow freely without being blocked. (No charge)

Enjoy continental breakfast on the Trailhouse porch at 8:00 a.m. before heading out for trail work. (contributions to the breakfast table are welcome but not required)

Lend a hand at our ongoing trail maintenance. Bring your clippers, gloves, refillable water bottle, insect repellent.

The Florida Scrub-Jays have been flying with the Blue Jays and collecting acorns, typical activity for the fall. Did you know the Florida Scrub-Jay collects approximately 6000 - 8000 acorns each year in the fall? These are buried until they need them when the weather gets cold.

Reminder :
The first Saturday of each month is The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail Orientation

For further information, to apply as a volunteer, or to register for the Orientation,

Happenings at the Trail

Monarch Tagging
(Saturday, October 21)
- Resident Monarch tagging specialist Jana Harris was joined by other butterfly enthusiasts from all over the state to tag Monarch butterflies to track their migration.

BioBlitz (Saturday, October 21)
- 28 species (225 adult butterflies) were observed during the Saturday morning hike and survey.
A special welcome to the members of Paynes Prairie Native Plant Society who participated.

Our very own birder extraordinaire John Thomton recently traveled with a Disney group to Northern Colombia, specifically the city of Barranquilla and the small town of Santa Catalina.

He was there helping with a dog-training initiative to benefit local wildlife, specifically the Cotton-top Tamarin, a small species of monkey only found in Northern Colombia.

The group was teaching local kids to see their local dogs that live on the streets in their town as pets, instead of wanting a wild animal from the forest as a pet. Animals being taken from the wild are a conservation problem in that region.

John will be birding at the Florida Scrub-Jay trail on Saturday, October 28,
beginning at 8:00 a.m. You are welcome to join him. On a recent hike of the trail, John spotted a variety of birds, including a Merlin (another type of falcon), Ovenbird, Tennessee Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Indigo Bunting, Painted Bunting, Blue Grosbeak and Baltimore Oriole.
