MAKE YOUR OWN SEEDBALLS
AT THE FLORIDA SCRUB-JAY TRAIL
MARCH 15, 2015 2:00PM-4:00PM
B.B. Brown's Gardens in Clermont is offering a fun and sustainable way to replant areas where the natural flora has been abandoned or destroyed.
Seed Balls are small marble sized balls you can make out of clay, compost and native seed and tossed into deserted areas in your yard or neighborhood. Once they are in place, they are left on their own. The ball itself actually gives enough shade to conserve moisture. The seed begins to germinate and the ball breaks apart. The small pile of crumbles provides the start for the root system, but still is heavy enough to anchor the emerging seeds to the ground. As the process continues, the mature plants produce seed to regenerate growth until complete plant cover is achieved.
B.B. Brown's Gardens is offering a "Make Your Own Seed Balls" class with Melinda Joy Miller, author and founder of The Shambhalla Institute. Step by step instructions and all materials will be provided.
Come and have a "Ball" with your club or a friend who you can make and throw seed balls together for years to come. Learning how to make seed balls is a great activity for kids, too. It's fun, easy to do and can be easily adapted to the environmental needs of the community.
