Herb and Spices Workshop

FALL GARDENING SERIES
HOME GROWN HERBS AND SPICES:  HOW TO USE THEM IN DAILY DIET
OCTOBER 8, 2011   10AM-2PM

Lei Lani Davis Herb & Spices Workshop

While many of us have learned to grow some basic herbs far too many of us don't know how to use them.

Join Lei Lani Davis as she illustrates how to utilize the herbs we all grow in our gardens during this hands-on workshop, held October 8, 2011 from 10am-2pm at B.B.Brown's Gardens, Clermont. The workshop will begin with general information about herbs and what herbs grow best in which temperatures, soil and PH. Like a progressive dinner, we will move towards which part of the plant to use and when fresh vs. dried is desired, along with ways to dry and freeze herbs. How do I utilize herbs and spices in cooking? Try your hand at making tea bags, dried herb mixture rubs, taste different vinegars and discuss when you might use one vs. another. Herbs are also being used more and more for health and medicinal purposes. Discussions and references along with reminders of cautions will all be included.

Originally from Anna Maria Island, Florida Lei Lani now hails from Live Oak, Florida. Having personally grown various flowers, herbs and vegetables in various Florida heat zones for over 35 years, Lei Lani knows the ins and outs of a successful growing season. Lei Lani has worked in every aspect of growing from a genetic technician for the Ball Seed Company to the University of Florida Research and Education Center and overseeing food safety, pest and plant management for a local hydroponic farm. Lei Lani currently owns and operates her own nursery “Heavenly Flower”.
