October 22, 2010 Trailday Newsletter
Hello Trailblazers and Friends,

Bald Eagle

The Scrub-Jays continue to be very active collecting the thousands of acorns that are needed to carry each of them over for the winter. We have a bumper crop this year on the Trail so they are happy campers.

Other birds that have been frequenting the Trail are bluebirds, bald eagles, yellow billed cuckoo, and many of the migratory songbirds to name a few.
John Thomton has been working on the bird checklist for the Trail and will have that available to the public soon.

Fall Trailday

October 23, 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. Held annually the fourth Saturday of October, Make A Difference Day is sponsored by USA Weekend and HandsOn Network, a business unit of Points of Light Institute. The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail is honored to partake in this event.

The Florida Scrub-Jay is endemic to Florida and we are losing it due to loss of habitat. Help to preserve the habitat of this federally listed species. You can make a difference October 23rd from 8am-11am and from 1pm-4pm by helping to clear a restoration site on The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail.

Scrub-Jays require a specific habitat. Come be a part of history as you create a section of The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail and learn what you can do in your community to further protect this threatened species for generations to come. See first hand what native plants belong in this habitat. Scrub-Jays are very active this time of year so you will most likely see a Scrub-Jay fly down beside you and thank you for your efforts.

WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING: Please wear comfortable, climate appropriate clothing, long pants, work gloves and CLOSED TOED shoes. (We recommend this type of clothing for YOUR safety when confronted with prickly pear cactus and branches.) Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent is also advised. Please bring shovels, clippers, and hard rakes if you have them.

MINIMUM AGE: This is a perfect family activity for ages 6 years and

October Highlights

Besides the activity of the jays, the Fall wildflowers are spectacular. Everything from the brilliant purples and pinks of Florida paintbrush, liatris, scrub- rosemary, to the bright oranges of the milk weed, and silver touches of love grass and palafoxia. The Craig Tufts Pollinator Garden is quite beautiful right now and is filled with pollinators of all kinds.

The organic herbs and vegetables are in the ground and in containers. We are looking forward to a bountiful season for the Giving Garden.
