Greetings from the Trail! |
This
has been a challenging summer
with high temps, high humidity, several
hurricanes and visits from feral hogs on the Scrub-Jay Trail. It
has also been a summer of many great opportunities, with major
projects on the horizon. It will be an exciting Fall, for sure!
Be sure to attend the trailday on September 27th for details.

Scrub-Jays preparing for Winter |
This is the time of year when the scrub-jays stock up on groceries for the winter. It's an abundant year for acorns, and the jays have been preoccupied with gathering them from every direction. This year they are all over the terrain and in areas that they normally are not found until they are ready to nest.

Trailblazers Expanding in Numbers |
New Trailblazers working with old-timers have resulted in great strides being made on the Trail. Over the past year we have had many newcomers that have taken the Orientation program the first Saturday of the month and then continued to contribute to the trail in various ways including volunteering on the 4th
Saturday of each month at the Trailday. We thank you very much for your contribution. When your great-grandchildren can still see the Florida Scrub-Jays you will know that you were an integral part of Florida heritage and culture.

Fall Rejuvenation Program |
Even though the temperature's going down, we're turning up the heat on the Scrub-Jay Trail. Each month you ask what can be done to help. We now have a great need for picnic tables and benches as well as benches along the trail. This is a perfect time of year for community organizations and groups to participate. If you would like to get involved with a group project please contact us at .

NWF Habitat Stewards Program |
 |
September 2008 National Wildlife
Federation Habitat Stewards Class |
Now in its 8th year with us
in Central Florida , the National Wildlife Federation Habitat
Stewards Training went
off without a hitch on September 13, 14 and 15 hosted by B.B.Brown's
Gardens. Thanks to Chris Parker who organized
and directed the many volunteers who participated in the 3 day
training. Twice a year the new Stewards, in training, rely on the
senior Stewards and the professional speakers, who contribute their
time, to guide them through this intense course.
Several of the new Habitat Stewards
(and there's 163 of them now) have joined in with the Scrub-Jay
Trail Trailblazers, so there's a double benefit to the program.
Since the Trailblazers and NWF Habitat Stewards are extraordinary
in their continuous contribution to their communities we offer
the opportunity first to you, to help with the efforts of the new
Stewards and their new community projects.
Some of the projects
currently at hand are creating wildlife habitat gardens with teachers
at Lake County Elementary Schools in Astatula and Altoona,
another is creating a wildlife demonstration garden and awareness
of the animals in need of adoption at the Humane Society
of Lake County,
while another is working with Building Blocks Learning
Center and
adults with developmental and physical disabilities as they create
raised vegetable beds and send their food to market. If you are
interested in working on any of these projects, or others, please
get in touch with us or B.B.Brown's Gardens at .
Your special connection and experience will be greatly appreciated
by the new Stewards and those they touch in their communities.
If you are interested in the next National Wildlife Federation
Habitat Stewards Training, applications are being accepted now
for
the March 7, 8, and 9, 2009 training.
Contact or (352)-429-5566.

Scrub-Jay Trail Orientation Program |
On the 1st Saturday of each month, we hold a 3 hour orientation program for newcomers to the Scrub-Jay Trail. This is a great way to introduce new folks to the trail and Florida's only endemic bird, so spread the word among your friends and neighbors to join this increasingly growing group. It's a great way to get outside and enjoy the Fall weather while creating habitat for the next generation of Florida Scrub-Jay. For a group tour other than the above scheduled date please contact .
