While there is an emptiness around the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail these days, there is also the presence and distant sound of laughter of children and adults calling “Charlie Brown” and “go get it” as they throw the ball or stick.

Charlie Brown’s favorite thing in the world was to greet visitors. He loved everyone, especially Scouts. And if there was any way he could convince you to play ball with him, he was truly in heaven.
He is in heaven now. During Hurricane Milton, we and Charlie Brown stayed in a shelter. He got stressed from being inside his kennel with the door closed. He never needed a closed door when at home. The closed door created stress which in turn caused his stomach to twist, a condition called Bloat.

Though he is gone, he will never be forgotten.

Charlie Brown grew up loving all wildlife, and he appreciated those who took care of injured or orphaned animals. If you choose to remember him, please consider a gift to Friends of Nature (put “Charlie Brown” in the memos section).

Trail maintenance on Saturday, October 26, is from 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. We will be clearing trails, trimming trees and brush, and cleaning up some of the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. Although the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail weathered the hurricane fairly well, there is still debris to be picked up and plants and materials to be "repositioned."

Bring your water bottle – we will supply plenty of cold water to refill your bottle. Other things to bring to Saturday’s Trailday are gloves, hats, pruning shears, and loppers. We have a limited supply of tools to share, so don’t worry if you don’t have your own.

One of the oak trees near the lake fell over and is hugging one of the cabins.
Boats were knocked off their supports, the dock canopy has had better days (but the dock is still standing strong!), and some of the wood and metal structures were damaged or completely flattened.
