TRAILDAY - SATURDAY, JANUARY 23
8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

We are looking forward to 2021 being a better year, but some things never change. There is always a need for on-going trail maintenance, and for volunteers at The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail. If you aren't doing so already, make this the year to show up and show your support in whatever way you can.
Please bring any equipment you have (we have a limited availability of equipment to loan for the day). Everyone should also wear gloves, closed-toed shoes and long pants. Bring your water bottle - we will supply plenty of cold water to refill your bottle.

Clermont Christmas Bird Count Results

Clermont Bird Count Coordinator John Thomton
thanks all who came out and birded!

A special shout-out goes to Bruce and Cathy Brown at the Scrub-Jay Trail
for being such gracious, generous and fun hosts!

We couldn’t do it without you!!

The Clermont Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, January 3, 2021.  It was the ninth annual count hosted at the Scrub-Jay Trail.

The 15-mile diameter count circle is centered on the north shore of Lake Minnehaha and extends outward 7.5 miles in every direction from that point. The circle is split into ten zones, and this year 39 birders were divided among the zones to count and identify as many birds as possible. They were very successful!

Altogether, they identified 135 species (a count record!), including four new species never seen on the count before: Common Goldeneye, Vermilion Flycatcher, Purple Finch, and Black-throated Blue Warbler.
Other species identified included Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Northern Pintail, Least Bittern, Bald Eagle, Purple Gallinule, Limpkin, Red-headed Woodpecker, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Painted Bunting, and Florida Scrub-Jay.

In total over the nine years, the Clermont Christmas Bird Count has identified 169 species.
The final applause goes to Carrabba's for their generous sponsorship
in support of
this important event.

The wonderful dinner they provide wraps up our count for the day and makes everything so warm and comfortable. What a wonderful ending to a long day!
