October 27, 2012 Trailday Newsletter
Hello Trailblazers!

We're looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, Saturday, October 27th for the October edition of the Scrub-Jay Trailday. The mornings have been beautiful, illustrating why we all put up with the summers down here and making it very pleasant to be out in the wild outdoors. Fall is one of the peak seasons for wildflower viewing on the Trail. Florida Paintbrush, Liatris, Flat-top goldenrod, Tithonia, Garberia, and Salvias are in looking beautiful in one stage or another of bloom ... a photographers dream!

During the Trailday tomorrow the object of our labors will be a pesky little species called Natal Grass. It has invaded the Trail, uninvited and unwanted. Please bring gloves for pulling this pesky weed. We hope to eliminate the seed heads.

It's been very busy lately, with all manner of projects converging all at once.

Lake County Wings and Wildflower Festival completed Sept, 30th
What a great effort on behalf of Kathy Pagan, who heads up the Lake County Florida Office Economic Development and Tourism and all who helped make this event a success. This event grew into huge proportions and covered the entire county with field trips, programs and workshops. The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail participated for all 3 days with hourly guided tours, Monarch Butterfly tagging and release, Geocaching with National Wildlife Federation's Ranger Rick, Gardening for Butterflies, and Building Bluebird nesting boxes. Your comments indicated that you were pleased and had it on your calendar for next year! WOW ... what a great first year! That never would have happened without all of our coordinators and volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for future events please let us know. We have events all year long and it is a great way to get credits for school and scholarships.

Lake County Adopt a Road Way Clean-Up
You've participated in our 2- Lake County Adopt a Road Way Clean-Ups with Florida Scrub-Jay T-shirts going to the most unique item found. One was for a vulture skull and the other a unique golf ball. We find that the more you keep the roadways clean the less people seem to throw things out. Such a catch 22! Nice for the roadways ... not so much fun for the competitions cleaning up!

Our Eagle Scouts
never disappoint us ... We have an ever growing list of opportunities for them (request our list) Alex Field completed 6 Wood Duck boxes and installation on Flag Lake at The Florida Scrub-Jay Trail.  For years we have had wood ducks but they had no breeding grounds until Alex stepped forward to make the wood duck boxes. Thank you Alex! Watch our population increase in the next few years!

Dr. Marc Minno
had a banner workshop filled to capacity. Everything you wanted to know about butterflies and their habitat and how to create gardens for them. Jana Harris, our local expert on growing monarchs, joined Marc with her monarch larva and chrysalis and all their habitat needed for successful migration .This along with the tagging and releasing of monarch butterflies for their journey to Central Mexico made for an exceptional workshop. Contact us if you want to know how to get involved with the next workshop at (352)-429-5566 or info@scrubjaytrail.org.

Louise Hunt
has been contributing to the Florida Scrub-Jay Trail since its inception. Everyone that enjoys a Florida Scrub-Jay Trail T-Shirt is enjoying a piece of art work from Louise. The signage and information that visitors can enjoy because of her is immense. The past few months she has donated many hours of photography and much research adding to the plants and butterflies found on the Trail. She is now adding insects and introducing signage on phase two of the restoration. This has directly made an impact on the students from elementary to college levels studying on the Trail. Thank you Louise for your talent and contribution!
